Is otoplasty right for you?
Otoplasty is best for patients who are in good health, do not have active disease or a serious pre-existing medical condition, and have realistic expectations for the results of the surgery. In general, otoplasty can be performed at any age after the ears have reached (or nearly reached) their adult size.
Otoplasty creates a more natural shape while providing balance and proportion to the ears and faces. Correction of even small deformities can be important in terms of appearance and self-confidence. If protruding or misshapen ears are bothering you or your child, you may want to consider plastic surgery.
About the Procedure
Otoplasty adjusts the ears closer towards the head and may involve molding, shaping, or removing cartilage to pull in the ears and reduce protrusion. This procedure will not affect your hearing. The operation covers only the outer ear area, not the middle ear or inner ear where hearing occurs. Post-operative incisions and resulting scars are well hidden behind the ear.
